We understand that contraception is a personal choice, and we’re here to make it simple, discreet, and accessible. Our evening and weekend clinics offer confidential consultations and prescriptions for two of the most widely used oral contraceptives: the
Progestogen Only Pill (POP) and the Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC).
Progestogen Only Pill (POP)
Advantages:
- Suitable for women who probably shouldn’t take oestrogen (e.g. smokers over 35, those with certain health conditions).
- Can be used while breastfeeding.
- May reduce painful or heavy periods.
- Fertility usually returns quickly after stopping.
Disadvantages:
- Should be taken around the same time every day (a delay of more than 12 hours for desogestrel POPs, can reduce effectiveness).
- Irregular spotting can occur, but is usually manageable.
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC)
Advantages:
- Highly effective when taken correctly.
- Can regulate periods, reduce menstrual pain, and improve acne.
- May reduce risk of ovarian, endometrial, and colorectal cancers.
- Fertility usually returns quickly after stopping.
Disadvantages:
- Slightly increased risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack—especially in smokers over 35 or women with certain health conditions – however this risk remains very small.
- Could cause some temporary side effects such as nausea, breast tenderness, or mood changes.
- Must be taken daily for effectiveness.
- Does not protect against STIs.
